The Strokes

The Strokes

Jullian Casablancas, Nick Valensi (the guitarrist) and Fab Moretti (the drummer) went together to the same school, and they started to play there, in Dwight School in Manhattan. Nicolai Fraiture had been friends with Casablancas and was attending the Lyncée Français de New York.

When he was only 13, Casablancas was sent to a boarding school in Switzerland, Le Rosey, to improve his academic performance. In Switzerland, Casablancas met the future guitarist of the strokes, Albert Hammond.

Later on, when Hammond came to New York, to attend NYU's Tisch School of Arts, he shared the apartment with Casablancas.

Their first performance was at Luna Lounge, on Lower East Side of New York, and at Manhattan's popular Mercury Lounge. Ryan Gentles, the Mercury Lounge's booker, quit his job to become the band's manager.

The band began rehearsing with a 14 song set which included: "Last Night", "The Modern Age", "This Life" (an early version of "Trying Your Luck"), "New York City Cops", "Soma" and "Someday".

Their first demo was sent to the newly reformed Rough Trade Records that sparked interest in the UK, leading to their first release the website of the UK magazine NME, that gave away a free mp3 download of "Last Night", a week prior to the physical release of "The Modern Age EP".
The EP sparked a bidding war among record labels, the largest for a rock and roll band in years!

So i leave you today with their brand new song, the "Under Cover of Darkness"!
Hope you enjoyed! :D Cheers!
